REVIEW Atomic Blonde: The Coldest City

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE November MI spy Lorraine Broughton was sent to Berlin to investigate the death of another agent and the disappearance of a list revealing every spy working there She found a powder keg of mistrust assassinations and bad defections that ended with the murder of MI's top officer as the Berlin Wall was torn down Now Lorraine has returned from the Cold War's coldest city to tell her story And nothing is what it see If you re looking for one of the best graphic novels ever look elsewhere This isn t a bad GN just not a game changer like The Dark Knight Returns or Watchmen Its middle of the road The story is reasonably fast paced and easy to follow Its decidedly British in character The artwork is decent Don t expect a bunch of Jim Lee uality splatter pages you ain t gonna get it but the art is bleak and the B W lends itself well to a story that is from a dreary and cold past In the end its worth a read but if you saw and loved Atomic Blonde I ll caution it was a somewhat loose adaptation of this GN Personally I think Atomic Blonde was a much better story that this The changes made the story much interesting and added a definite plot twist which was hinted at in the GN but not explored If you want to see the source material for Atomic Blonde that s why I read it you won t necessarily be disappointed but if you re expecting the same story in another format you ll likely be left wanting IF this would be your first foray into GNs I would advise starting with something considerably better first DKR or Watchment are what I d recommend As someone who reads comics regularly I found the story to be decent but a bit obvious Ideally the art and writing need to work together to where the art is doing what a picture is supposed to do be worth 1000 words This fell well short of that mark but was entertaining nonetheless for the 30 minutes it took me to read it If I d gone into it without having first seen the film I might have had a different reaction but probably not Atomic Blonde was really really good Typically a film is lucky to live up to the uality of the source material most often they fall short literally every Batman movie thus far is a good example I can think of two examples where the films were better than the GN the first is V for Vendetta and the second is Atomic Blonde

If you're looking for one of the best graphic novels ever; look elsewhere This isn't a bad GN just not a game changer like The Dark Knight Returns or Watchmen Its middle of the road The story is reasonably fast paced and easy to follow Its decidedly British in character The artwork is decent Don't expect a bunch of Jim

Since it's black and white and some of the art is cryptic the story was difficult to follow at times or the characters got confusing It helped that I saw the movie first Had to read some pages than once But then it all mak
