Na maldición infernal el amor de una joven en peligro las brujerías satánicas de una bella hechicera italiana y al propio Conde un personaje trágico capaz de desafiar al Infiern. So there s this stretch of sea And in it is a pit And in the pit is a hole You d think a hole and a pit would be one and the same but apparently they aren t And in the pit isSomething And your job as a reader is to slog thru 125 pages of nearly unreadable prose fashioned somewhat after a style that might have been popular 500 years ago until you reach the final chapter and find out what it is Somehow this is supposed to be reminiscent of MR James but I m sure that distinguished writer would roll over in his grave to hear of such a comparison That or laugh until his bones rattled It d have been better had Ross called it A Hole In The Head The opening story By One By Two and By Three is far better and the reason I m giving this 2 stars instead of zero The story itself isn t original it s something Lovecraft could have handled better but at least it is told in readable English

En el año 1645 en una Inglaterra dividida por la guerra entre los partidarios de Cronwell y los del rey Carlos Hubert Leyton un pacífico caballero puritano es escogido para una mi. An interesting little Weird novel 1914 rescued from obscurity Dedicated to MR James this was the work of Arthur Reed Ropes 1859 1933 a Cambridge don writing under a pseudonymShort version who would enjoy this book James fans probably as while it is decidedly not an English Ghost Story in the master s form it reads as a gloomy adventure novel documenting the kind of events that would have formed the historical foundation discovered no doubt by an antiuarian for the events in a James tale Fans of Robert E Howard s Solomon Kane character might also find this tale of a Puritan swordsman battling loathsome evil to be somewhat resonant although this is less action based than Howard s work Those who are looking for a different kind of historical adventure novel or are interested in stories set during the English Civil War might also find much to enjoy but it should be stated that these elements are mere backdrop to what is in essence a moody Gothic Curse storyLonger version In 1645 Hubert Leyton a Puritan swordsman and scholar visits the remote seaside town of Marsham to convince his rebellious cousin the Earl of Deeping to cease enmities with Cromwell and the local peasants But the Earl dwelling in a rotting stone castle surrounded with disgruntled soldiers and assisted by a treacherous Italian woman who practices sorcery is suffering under a strange family curse involving a seeming gelatinous creature that dwells in a fetid pit in the sea marsh Leyton is held at the castle and must bear witness to the increasing distress of his mad cousin as hemmed in by Roundhead forces they eventually find themselves under monstrous siegeNow that synopsis may make the book sound action packed than it actually is In truth while there is some small battle a duel and destructive catastrophe the book is concerned with its gloomy brooding tone of dissolute gentry under duress and its atmospheric setting in a run down isolated castle on a bleak misty seaside salt marsh I found it effective but not overly engaging there are some memorable moments an occult ritual that goes awry utilizing something akin to a Hand of Glory the initial siege scene with gray slime oozing through the walls the somber and desperate Last Supper and the atmosphere grey skies storms misty vistas is top notch But our lead being a dedicated if not overzealous Puritan is a bit of a drip if pleasingly clear headed and honorable fun are The Earl slowly cracking under the pressure and his consort Signorina Fiammetta Bardi an Italian woman with some sorcerous knowledge and a touch of the Borgias about her Two interesting aspects the religious underpinning of the book while important is not overstated and could honestly be called subdued Likewise the detail and motivation let alone the actual physicalityactuality of the creature is never expounded upon That it is real we are not to doubt but there is no expositional segment which lays out its origins So in the end an interesting readI read the text as part of the Uncanny Banuet Great Tales of the Supernatural anthology I was prepping it for eventual inclusion in the WEIRD ADVENTURE NOVEL MEGAPACK from WILDSIDE PRESS

An excellent tale Very readable and ignoring its seventeenth century setting very contemporary feelingRamsey Campbell mentions Hodgson others have mentioned James but this brief novel reminded me of contemporary works such as 'The Terror' by Simmons 'The Fisherman' by Langan and even John Carpenter's 'The Thing'Great book highly recommended

What an atmospheric horror masterpiece Just almost at the top with Black Spirits and White of Ralph Adams Cram The horrific entity that lurks inside the marshes and filth almost as if it was a representation of the subconscious beast that lurks inside our innermost dark places of our mind
