Well I did it I ve read through all four volumes of this great work The Philokalia which is Greek for love of beauty And I do think that the writings in these volumes are beautiful in their clarity their guidance on cultivating a closer relationship to God fighting temptations and their candor and frankness about the difficulties and challenges involved in growing in the Christian lifeAs is consistent with the Vols 1 2 and 4 Volume 3 s writers emphasize the role of prayer fasting Bible study and doing good works as fruit but also the deeper difficult ones of humility and denying the passions of life that distract so easily from the focus on the things of God The most effective writings in this volume at least as far as getting through my thick skull were by St Philotheos of Sinai Ilias the Presbyter and St Makarios of Egypt Whether intentional or not having St Makarios writings at the end seemed most apropos In addition to relating the principles previously related in this book he cautions against two things arrogance and overconfidence coming from maintaining an outwardly appearing pious life increasingly hollowed out by pride or from receiving a deeply moving spiritual experience causing one to mistake that for having some greater connection to God or superiority to others inevitably leading as he gives in examples to the individual falling into deeper levels of perversity or darkness than those without those The antidote he reminds again and again is constant humility and total focus on love for GodLike the other volumes of the Philokalia this book is definitely not for everyone It s a very deep work that probably only works or is meaningful for someone sincerely seeking ways to draw closer to God and climb out of the spiritual rut that many of us Christians have found ourselves in during life s journey I think it s an excellent book for that purpose in conjunction with participation in the life of the Church
