Our mortal world and the demonic Dark World has succeeded in preserving the tenuous peace treaty between the two worlds averting an all out war Now a new threat from the Dark World terrorizes humanity a monster that invades people’s dreams and causes them to commit murderBlack Guard agents Taki a hardboiled human and hi Normally I love Hideyuki Kikuchi and the last wicked city novel was wicked but this one meh First off it has no continuity with the previous novel at all other than featuring Taki Makie it makes no reference to her pregnancy and indeed at one point she wonders if she is in love with Taki which we know she is from the previous book There s barely any characterisation of these two at allSecondly i didn t like the plot this one deals with dream realities a trope Kikuchi uses often but really makes things confusing prose not being a visual medium So we have an incubus who rapes women in their dreams Since the women no longer want regular sex the human race is likely to die out In order to defeat it they have to unleash a powerful incubus to fight it and stop the whole world turning into a dream world The plot itself doesn t make that much sense and adding in the confusion of dreams within dreams ickIt seems like an excuse to write a whole load of glorified rape seuences to me They only happen to women who seem to enjoy being raped by demons tentacle monsters a giant wooden tank maggot covered corpses snakes You want hentai in novel form look no further But while Kikuchi usually balances the freaky sex scenes with story that really isn t the case here alas it s really gratuitous With lines like An ordinary wife being raped by a demon in one shady corner of the underground was hot and a housewife and a demon at the same time menage a trois It was the fantasy of every man no matter his species You begin to see just how self indulgent this isThe other thing lacking here is character The only interesting character is the Dream Guard Saga Miyuki an alcholic Black Guard who is the only one who has the power to save the day The rest of the characters including the villains are paper thinOne other thing to note is the lack of illustrations the previous Wicked City novel was illustrated while this one isn t Maybe the artist objected to the content of this one seriously it s one rape scene after another or maybe if illustrated it would need an advisory warningSo Gratuitous and anti feminist in the extreme with a confusing plot and paper thin characters this one is a bit of a let down It s still Kikuchi and full of his trademark freaky weird but certainly not his finest hour

The classic anime Wicked City is based on a series of novels by master horror writer Hideyuki Kikuchi TorSeven Seas is pleased to present these novels to the North American audience for the first time featuring cover art by Christian McGrath The Dresden FilesThe Black Guard whose job it is to protect the boundary between If Wicked City Black Guard was like The Men in Black but with demons then think of Wicked City The Other Side as Hollywood Classic Inception but yet again with demonsThroughout this novel there are plenty of dreams inside other dreams And often scenes that seemed authentic at first turn out to be nothing than smoke and mirrors in the end This techniue could have been uite fruitful and easily elevated this work to legendary status but instead it was a little messy and regularly uite difficult to readOn one occasion I did start to get a sense of which direction the plot was heading towards but by the end of the book I was proven wrong The complex web of dreams I was beginning to expect was nowhere to be seen and instead the story was actually uite one dimensionalThe novel did have some positives In particular I uite enjoyed the dialogue between Taki and Makie They are a fantastic pairing and these scenes moved to reaffirm that It is a shame that Hideyuki Kikuchi seems dead set on re purposing his demonic femme fatale as a damsel in distress There are also some good additions to Wicked City lore in this book although I can t guarantee that they don t contradict anything established in the previous bookIn my last review I described Wicked City Black Guard as a masterpiece cheapened by its reliance on graphic sex scenes and it appears that the author hasn t learned from his mistakes In fact he has started going in the wrong direction The Other Side is a compilation of sex scenes with additional story than the other way round Literally there must be at least twenty sex scenes in this book And obviously when I say sex I don t mean sex I think the author should do everyone a favour and retitle this book Rape City The Other Side That being said I cant say that I disliked this book When the story eventually managed to stray from the dark path that it seemed to be glued to the story was actually uite enjoyable But I must say that I found the ending a little disappointing Who would ve thought that a book so heavily laden with sex could turn out to be so anti climatic Ironic eh35
