Nakhane Toure's debut novel Piggy Boy's Blues a distorted pastoral is for all intents and pur. I get the feeling that there was pressure put on the author to get this book finished whilst riding the wave of exposure via Black Coffee etc It s not very good overall but there are snippets that show promise for a future endeavour maybe It failed to grip and is fairly lightweight uite disappointing as I really wanted to like it

Alice the torn of his birth the novel portrays a XHosa royal family past its prime and glory. Nakhane Tour s debut novel has been described as an inverted pastoral Instead of glorifying the simple life it thrusts such a life up into harsh sunlight showing up all its flaws The story concerns the decline of a Xhosa royal family the Ms Most of the plot is told from the point of view of Davide M who travels from Johannesburg to his dusty birth town of Alice in the Eastern Cape perhaps to escape his mother s illness or a white boy a compartment on its own as one character notes lover In Alice Davide stays with his uncle and the latter s companion Gray the piggy boy referred to in the title of the book What ensues is a tragic and disturbing violence that leaves Davide damaged and uestioning The peace and uiet he sought destroyed in one act The book is disconcerting with a pervasive malaise but beautifully rendered

    2016 is the year of great reads Another stellar book For someone so young Nakhane is an insightful writerThe book has a contemporary appeal The story is made up of little stories with their own chapters making the whole book a captiva

    I gave this book 2 stars Because I believe there was so much he could have done with it The technicalities of this book could have used improvement I worry that South African editors either suck at what they do or they purposefully allow a good work not to reach its full potential The way I feel was done with this book Just like K

    It is a very well written book Nakhane is a promising novelist It took me a VERY long time to get into the book There was a lot to remember and piece together I like that things I do not want to spoil the book here by naming these things were not named the read could decide what they wanted to call them I like that
