N laptop screens everywhere Publication is scheduled for fall 2016; Tina Wexler of ICM negotiated the deal for world English rights via Publishers Weekly I was expecting this to be a humor essay collection but it s really of a coming of age memoir in essay form Akilah Hughes is funny obviously but it s about her life growing up in predominantly white school and her experiences with racism trying to break into the industry her experiences in university and moving to New York etc The essays are all very different topics and probably would benefit from being read one at a time instead of back to back like I did Her health struggles at the end of the book really took me by surprise and I felt sick reading her dealing with a profoundly unjust medical system The book covers such a range of topics and tones that I don t know how to think about it now that I m done honestly I think I ll have to sit with it for a bit
