„Под игото“ е първият български роман Подзаглавие „Из живота на българина в навечерието на Освобождението“Написан е от Иван Вазов по време на изгнание в Одеса пренесен е в България с руската дипломатическа поща Композиционно романът се състои от три части и 88 глави които обхващат подготовката избухването и потушаването на Априлското въстание Сюжетното действие започва с идването на Бойчо Огнянов в Бяла Черква. Overall a great book and you can certainly see why this is considered to be THE Bulgarian classic The story is about a revolt revolution The protagonist Boicho saves a fellow Bulgarian father and daughter from certain death at the hands of 2 Turks by killing both of them He then essentially goes into hiding and throughout the course of his hiding ferments his idea of a revolution The Bulgarians at that point had been living under the yolk of Turkish hegemony and were desperate to free themselves of the oppression which the author describes but not in that much detail The story is given a second dimension due to the love story embedded within it between Boicho aka Ognianoff and the young Rada who falls in love with him I wouldn t want to give too much of the story away but essentially there is a big revolt which Boicho galvanises the result of which you will have to read yourself This took me a while to read because the translation was by some dodgy company because ever 10th word was incorrectly typed and also I found it took its time to get going in the middle There is a lot of action in the start and at the end but it slows right down in the middle Overall certainly worth a read especially if you are Bulgarian or Turkish

Fun little introduction to Bulgarian culture by an author that deserves greater examination as his storytelling reminds me of Sienkowitz of Poland and other Eastern European novelists My only complaint is that this is but a fraction of a great saga that in my cursory search has not been translated into English
