Popular Book, Maktan 1521 author Tepai Pascual There are many interesti. The author Tepai Pascual is a graduate of Fine Arts in UP Diliman Maktan 1521 was her thesis reuired prior to her graduation UP or University of the Philippines is one of the most prestigious universities in the Philippines So for Tepai Pascual to graduate from her course she had to make sure that her work this book would pass the scrutiny of her thesis adviser and the panelists during her defense What I am trying to say is that Tepai Pascual really did her research on the life of Lapu Lapu who defeated the Spanish conuistador Ferdinand Magellan 1480 1521This complimentsss the book about Magellan that I read a few years back Laurence Bergreen s Over the Edge of the World Magellan s Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe 4 stars and did not contradict any Bergreen s stories including how Magellan died The back of his leg was pierced by an arrow from Lapu Lapu s men and he was basically alone advancing fearlessly because he thought that God was with him Probably he thought as Tepai Pascual seemed to suggest that the Filipino natives being pagans were godless and there was no one to protect them Again just like the US President McKinley in 1898 with his benevolent assimilation it was the feeling of arrogance and superiority that the conuerors have towards their conuered that happened in that morning of 1521 in the island of MactanI also liked the way Tepai injected the story of Sawili that she found to be the son of Lapu Lapu I did not know that Lapu Lapu had a son and it is in the account of Pigafetta I ve read a number of non fiction books and no one picked up this side of Lapu Lapu I mean him being a fatherThe only little complaint about this book is the illustrations The characters are not easily distinguishable from each other for me Lapu Lapu also looks a bit too rich and grandiose what with all the golden necklace and flowing long hair He looked like a god rather than a fierce warriorOverall I appreciate this book that uses the less know facts about one of the most important Philippine heroes Through this book young people would learn and appreciate what Lapu Lapu contributed to what we are as a nation

First thing's first see the art style was brilliant It really was It reminds me a lot of Frank Miller's 300 with the whole cinematic format and all that The colors itself seem to be mirroring the said graphic novel I'd say Tepai Pascual was probably inspired a lot by the aforementioned Frank Miller title Now I first encountered this book at Komikon 2015 if I'm not mistaken Yes it's uite a bit late really Never
