To Be an Anchor in the Storm

One The survivor of a batterer herself Susan Brewster has counseled abused women for than a decade She teaches readers ho. If you know or think you know a person who is being abused or whose relationship seems unsettlingly off then this is a must read I wish that the author had dispensed with the terms batterer and instead used abuser and I found the constant assumption that the victim is female difficult However these are two things I was able to cope with in order to get very very valuable insight from this book It was not uite what I was expecting and I am sure it will make me a better person in all my relationships in addition to the reason I picked it up

Sure to become a standard resource here is a hands on guide written for people who want to help a battered friend or loved. Good information and despite its age I think still pretty current except for the resources in the appendixWhile other examples are incorporated Brewster uses a story of three sisters to talk about distancing controlling and anchoring The most interesting thing to me was that attempting to do too much for the person being abused creates a similar dynamic to the control of the abuser Part of healing is beginning to act again making decisions and finding competence and confidence It makes sense but it is easy to see how the instinct to rescue would run counter to the needIt was also encouraging to find that people who worked on their skills for helping people experiencing abuse also found that it improved other relationshipsThe most annoying thing was several uses of ALL CAPS which made it feel like the book was yelling at me though that is probably related to years of internet use
