Just Win Baby

Revealing how an obscure young assistant coach in less than a decade progressed to become a head coach general manager league commissioner and controlling partner of the Oakland Raiders franchise this biography pays tribute to the late Al Davis Contrary to Davis’s notoriously uirky and reclusive reputation this account is. I really enjoyed Just Win Baby by Murray Olderman The book reads like one really long newspaper article about Al Davis which makes sense because Mr Olderman spent his life as a sports journalist and cartoonist The book focus s mainly on Al Davis becoming coach of the Raiders and then AFL commissioner and then managing general partner of the Raiders not so much from the 90 s up until present I was pleased with that decision by Mr Olderman because in my opinion the Al Davis story with the AFL and NFL took place in the 60 s and 70 s The interactions with Davis and then commissioner Pete Rozelle are classic along with the stories of Al Davis raiding the NFL for talent after the NY Giants signed away Kicker Pete Gogolak for the AFL Buffalo Bills before the merger I think a lot of people give Joe Namath credit for the AFL NFL merger than Al Davis bc of Super Bowl III but Olderman really gets at the heart of the reasons for and against the merger and what needed to happen and the who the major players were with regards to the completion of the merger Football fans do truly owe Al Davis a lot for the NFL we all know today
