Starting with some good things I have to say that Lem has an elouent way of writing and his ideas of the future even if today we heard them many times already are presented interestingly and reading them feels if they were brand new But as this is a character driven story the dialogs discussions and people would need to b

Obłok Magellana – główne dzieło fantastyki naukowej pierwszej połowy lat pięćdziesiątych – przez wiele lat nie był przez autora wznawiany choć z pu One of the first books of my favourite author and a book that I have not read before a first read It has not been reprinted many times and is one of the least favourite of the authorThis is a story of a long interstellar journey to Magellanic Cloud a 20 years journey Lem is just starting on his writing sci fi odyssey the novel is strange in the way it is paced most of the book is dealing with the journey itself leaving the end the climax to only few final chapters a rather strange overall experience It does deal mostly with the ideas of loneliness and isolation Interestingly enough I still found some concepts of futuristic ideas on how such a journey would look like very interesting and the book was written in 1955 after all The environment of communist Poland must have been playing a part a time of rebuild and an optimism in collective can be felt in this novel The communist thread can be felt but is not overbearingTwo main ideas start to float to the top ideas which will be so prevalent in Lem s future novels The first contact with alien society that is well very alien Solaris EdenThe Invincible and how long space journey could impact on astronauts Return From the Stars Overall uite interesting for such an early work but misses the point and does not deliver in the end uite an abrupt ending maybe intended
