During my reshuffle earlier this month I was considering consigning this character to scrap, I think he looks awful on white T Shirts (yes yes I know). I was encouraged to try him on different colour T Shirts. Quite like him on different shades. He has a whiff of the graveyard shift about him and he looks alright on zombie brown shirts doesn’t he?
We had a celestial bird stature at Moons yonks ago called Fuenhang or something. The character crept into the Tales of the Blue Moon as a regular foil for the bar staff. I later found out through Wikipedia there is a celestial bird in China called Fenghuang. By that time we were already calling the character Fuen for short, and this was my doodle of her.
No celestial feathers were ruffled in the making of this T Shirt.
A character after initial doodle I dumped on Flickr and ignored. I later got told by a few people that it was their favorite doodle of mine. Getting it into a high rez image was really hard though. The original doodle is about 2cm high. It was tiny. No matter how I upsized and vectored her she always had little bobbles on her lines. After some shouting, swearing and bashing the laptop about, I got the bobble lines into semi bobble lines that I loved. The result ended up on the T Shirt above.
I filled in his eyes as white, but left the post posca dots on his head transparent. The above image is the social media friendly image I can tweet for him. He also looks nice on colours other than white. Again, yes, I know, it was my first time creating this sort of thing.
As the above image suggests, he is also now available on my Threadless store.
One of the first T Shirts I uploaded to Threadless had this guy on. The problem was he was too big. Like way to big. He covered the whole front of the shirt. I like the look of him, but aesthetically on a shirt, it was kinda dumb. Also only available in white. Hey it was my first time with this sorta thing.
I spent some time talking to people on Twitter, there was a general agreement though that I needed to shrink him center his eyes to the neck line better, offer more than white and give him a more Tweet & Facebook friendly image.
The above was the result. Quite happy with it. Sometimes its the little changes that make the difference.
You can buy Smoke in a million (maybe 20) different colours on my Threadless store.
