Clash

Had a splurge doodling on newspapers again. Interesting thing. I have become conscious recently that I am uploading images of photos from newspapers. Now theres a legal mine field right?

So this stuff is stock photography, I doubt anyone will ever find these images and charge me for their use. However, I am also conscious my blog and name have grown beyond my own little corner of the blogosphere.

I can use rights free photo websites, but thats not the same as doodling on a paper spread across the desk making a mess is it?

I think December will be the last month of newspaper doodles. I’ll find some other images to use for the new year aye?

Doodled with Posca Pens.

I’ve gotten around this obstacle by using my own photographs, That way there is no question. Have you read “Steal Like an Artist” by Austin Kleon? It’s great.

    Cheers!

I understand your conundrum. When I taught kids in the computer lab, I tried to include copyright, fair use, etc. I do understand the need for copyright protection, but what I discovered was a legal mess out there with a lot of issues only being decided AFTER they went to court. Disney and other businesses have taken the original intent of copyright (an author should benefit from work for a limited time–don’t remember exactly, but I believe it was under 10 years) and stretched it way too far. Originally, at some point, the creator was intended to move on and produce more original stuff and others should be able to use parts in new original works. As to your doodles, the newsprint is part of your medium–for a time anyway. The effect will not be the same without the graininess, etc. Also, let’s be honest, doodling by definition occurs on whatever is handy. To go into files and find pictures, size them, print them, does take away the element of spontaneity. I think your concern, given the current litigious climate, is justified, but it’s a shame.

Urgh, Disney. Horrid company. Annoying but I will figure something else out to doodle. Might experiment with computer arts and vary up the pens I use with paper.

Annoying eh? Can let a bird crap on it but you cannot make a collage art and display it.
